Low Emissivity Glass
We recognize that a well-insulated home can save money on heating, so we offer “Low e” glass (sometimes referred to as “K” glass) for customers that are looking to lower their home heating bills by retaining more heat in their house.
Low Emissivity glass is only available for double-glazed windows, but can be supplied with either normal or toughened glass. This feature is provided using a metal-oxide layer that reduces the infrared radiation transferred between the cold and warm panes of glass.
This type of glass results in an approximate reduction of energy loss by around 30-50% over non-treated glass. Low E glass comes in a choice of two types of coating. “Soft-coat” is applied between panes of a double-glazed unit, because it is easily damaged, and it degrades when exposed to air.
“Hard-coat” can be applied to existing glass installations, and is more durable than “soft-coat”, although the performance compared to it is inferior.
Barnstaple toughened glass services
Express Barnstaple glazing experts offer a variety of safety glass services including toughened glass installations and replacements. Toughened glass will usually shatter into small fragments instead of sharp shards when broken, making it less likely to cause severe injury and deep lacerations. This is particularly useful for certain frames such as cat flaps, glass doors and tables.
Our Barnstaple toughened glass normally takes three to five working days to order in for both single and double-glazed options. This glass is recommended for Barnstaple residential customers, as the glass shatters into relatively harmless fragments upon impact, as opposed to the larger, more dangerous shards caused by breakage of normal glass. However, due to the security risk of having a large hole when the glass has been shattered, we do not recommend this for our Barnstaple commercial customers, whom we offer laminate glass to instead.
